Winter 2008, Vol. 1, Issue 4
Winter is now in full swing as I’m sure many of you can tell simply by how dry your skin is! For many, winter is a time of “hibernation”—awaiting a fresh new awakening that Spring brings! January is a great time to reflect and set new goals for ourselves. If one of your new year’s goals or resolutions is to take better care of yourself, then be sure to incorporate skin care and therapeutic massage into your regimen. Studies have shown that people slow down and even get “the blues” during winter months and that doing things that make us feel better physically, can certainly help. So instead of just meandering through these blah winter months, focus on unleashing a new you come spring and taking better care of yourself now! Tell yourself that you deserve it because you do!

The Limelight Facial is one of our latest laser treatments that has proven successful in markedly reducing skin redness, broken blood vessels, brown spots, or sun damage, hence, making your skin look younger! In most cases, these conditions are caused by sun exposure over our lifetime and are what most people simply consider natural “aging”. Common areas where we notice much of these skin conditions are on the face, neck, upper chest, arms, and hands. The treatment is quick and generally requires no anesthetic. One to three treatments are usually sufficient to see desired results. If you’re tired of looking in the mirror at these pesky conditions, call our office a call today at 410-544-9988 to request further information or set up your free consultation.
Renee’s Blog
Trying to keep warm this time of year and your skin protected can be quite the challenge. While it may be tempting to jump into a nice hot shower to warm our bones, hot water can strip our skin of necessary moisture resulting in dehydrated, cracked skin. Hot water is one of the culprits that exacerbates the dilation of those pesky little broken blood vessels that commonly appear around the nose and cheek area.
Dehydrated skin results in more noticeable fine lines and wrinkles as well. Since cooler showers are simply not inviting during the winter months, try cleansing the face before or after the shower with tepid water. As for the rest of the body, it’s important to moisturize immediately after showering. Applying a good, therapeutic body lotion to damp skin helps to lock in and retain moisture better.
Also of importance is wearing a sunscreen year round. Remember, UVA (aging), UVB (burning) and UVC(cancerous) rays know no season. Sun damage occurs year round. An SPF 30 is best for maximum daily protection. Many make-ups nowadays do contain sunscreens, however, they typically aren’t broad spectrum and do not provide maximum protection. Consider a daily moisturizer that contains a sunscreen as it cuts down on one more step in your skin care regimen. Make-up, especially mineral make-up, adds extra protection with its physical sun-blockers and the moisturizer with sunscreen applied before-hand will help make your make-up go on a lot smoother. You only have one face and it has the right to remain ageless, healthy, and cancer free!

An Education in Skin Care: Adult Acne
Did your mother tell you when you were a teenager suffering with acne that you’d grow out of this stage? The teen years passed and in your twenties the battle began all over again? College stress? Fast-food diet? Career adjustment? The 30-something years arrive and you still suffer with bouts and flares of pimples and unsightly blackheads! Married life and perhaps new motherhood adjustment you presume. My goodness, now in your fortieth decade of life and you can’t believe your eyes when you look in the mirror wondering what is going on with your skin! “I should be way past this!” you think to yourself! Enter menopausal years and you simply can not believe that to this day, you still are battling this problem! What the heck is going on? Well, it’s still that dirty 4 letter word “ACNE” that can and does occur in adults!
Acne is a hereditary skin disorder that manifests itself in the form of pimples and blackheads in different severities. Many people consider it a teenage skin problem. However, acne can afflict people of practically any age. Since acne is one of the biggest concerns I hear about from my esthetic clients, adult acne is the focus of this writing. Adult acne usually presents in ones twenties or thirties. Contrary to popular belief, studies have shown that foods do not influence acne flares. Hormonal fluctuations are the common cause of adult acne. Breakouts are typically noticed around menstruation. If you notice that you suffer from breakouts just around menstruation, this is considered premenstrual acne and is related to hormonal shifts that cause an in increase in sebum (oil) production as well as inflammation within the follicles which causes an obstruction. This obstruction then causes a build up that anaerobic bacteria thrive on resulting in pimples. Often times, the blemishes typically occur around the chin and jawline partly due to the larger sebaceous glands in this area. Stress also causes hormonal fluctuations that result in excess sebum production and inflammation. During times of stress, both adrenaline and androgen hormones are increased thus causing an increase in sebum production. Those who suffer with hormonal acne do best coming in for a facial mid-cycle to combat those upcoming breakouts.
There is no magic cure for acne, however, it can be controlled with the right skin regimen. Often it may take a little bit of a trial and error approach to keep acne flares under control, but there are methods that have been clinically proven to reduce and improve the condition. A dermatologist can help prescribe topical or oral medications to help with many of the internal factors influencing acne and estheticians, who are educated in product chemistry, can help find the right skin care regimen suited to your skin type and perform skin treatments that effectively improve your skin’s appearance. Skin care has come along way since Noxema and Pond’s Cold Cream days. Modern skin care is advanced and technologically sophisticated in its formulations and can certainly effect change in your skin. Take the guesswork out of choosing what’s right for your skin. Call today to schedule a facial or skin consult today! Be on your way to a better looking, better feeling you!
